Batavia Boutique Hotel

12 Louw Street, in the heart of Stellenbosch, used to be an old derelict house, with an overgrown garden and very little going for it...
That was until Matilda de Bod noticed the potential of this old house in April of 2003 and decided to renovate it into the beautiful building standing at the same address today.

Batavia Boutique Hotel is the brainchild of Fire and Glory Investments (pty) LTD - a company established by Matilda de Bod, Windred van Reenen and Joan Sonn. Perhaps "Fire and Glory" is a fitting description for what happened in the 8 months of starting and completing this purpose built Boutique Hotel.

The name "Batavia Boutique Hotel" was derived from Batavia, a Dutch Colony in South East Asia. Many of the senior officials at the Cape (established on 6 April 1652), including Jan van Riebeek, had previously served in the east. The Governer, Simon van der Stel, who established the small town of Stellenbosch in 1672, grew up in Batavia.

Batavia, as well as the Cape of Good Hope, was a place of rendezvous, a meeting place for ships and travellers, a place to gain access to fresh produce and lastly, a place of restoration.

Winner of boutique hotel category of 2005 & 2006 AA Accommodation Awards. Within walking distance of all major town attractions, it is a perfect base from which to explore the Cape Winelands and Cape Peninsula. Ample good restaurants within close vicinity.

Batavia Boutique Hotel is a luxurious 6 bedroom establishment in the heart of Stellenbosch village life. Known for its attention to details and sincere hospitality.

Experience the Batavia - reminiscent of the comfortable villas that hosted discerning travellers and lordly merchants in the bygone days of the Dutch East India Company. This boutique hotel is conveniently situated just off Dorp Street, the historic heart of Stellenbosch.

THE STORY BEHIND ST. NICHOLAS COTTAGE
During the days of trade ships sailing from Europe around South Africa to the east, St. Nicholas Point was the last point on the map you had to sail around, before entering Batavia , the famous Dutch Colony in Indonesia . Merchant ships would rendezvous at Batavia to get fresh produce, overnight and relax. St. Nicholas, the saint that St Nicholas point was named after, was the saint of seafarers and voyagers. It is our wish for you to enjoy St. Nicholas Cottage @ Batavia, while having exposure to all the services that we offer at Batavia Boutique Hotel.
