Bloubergstrand - meaning “blue
mountain beach” in the Afrikaans language - is just what the name
suggests – a long, beautiful beach with a mountain view – popular for
its white sandy beaches and perfect for outdoor activities. Blouberg is
a suburb of Cape Town about 18km north of the city centre, mainly
residential and attracts large numbers of local and overseas visitors.
Overlooking Table Mountain and Robben Island
where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, it is a sought after location for
spectacular dinners or sundowners from the many excellent restaurants
or picnics on the beach.
Blouberg has developed and expanded tremendously over the past few
years – Parklands, just behind Blouberg is the fastest-growing area in
sub-Saharan Africa! More developments for Blouberg include the building
of a hotel, a water entertainment park, a golf course and a variety of
other tourist attractions.
BEACHES
The ever popular long, sandy beaches of Blouberg have been hit by a kite-boarding storm!
You can watch them from the beach or enjoy sundowners at any one of the restaurants or cocktail bars overlooking the beaches.
Little Bay is more private and perfect for families wanting to spend a day relaxing in the sun.
To the north of Bloubergstrand (strand meaning beach in Afrikaans) lies Big Bay beach where highly rated surfing contests are often hosted.
Travel tip: Be careful of the fierce African sun and use a sun blocker with a high screen factor. Try to avoid sun tanning between 12h00 and 15h00 during the summer months.
EATING OUT -- / RESTAURANTS
The beachfront promenade has a wide variety of restaurants and cocktail bars - exceptional food and fresh sea food daily fished in the area at surprisingly reasonable prices.
Enjoy a cold beer or relax with the best pizzas in town, watching the sunset over the ocean with Table Mountain in the background or dine in an original fisherman’s cottage at the waters edge.
SHOPPING
Within a stone's throw of the beach, a whole host of restaurants offers excellent dining. Blouberg provides a great variety of modern shopping centers with all that your heart could desire, as well as all other amenities, including cinemas, which can be expected from one of the fastest growing areas in Cape Town.
