Welcome to Clico Guest House, a four-star boutique guest house in Rosebank, Johannesburg
Officially opened in June 2006, Clico is perfectly situated in the leafy, central Rosebank, an upmarket suburb of South Africa’s commercial centre, Johannesburg. Housed in a 60-year old Cape Dutch house, Clico is an engaging mix of old and new – from the original Oregon pine floorboards and antique inlaid-wood side tables from Morocco, to custom-made, comfortable couches and the modern, whimsical sculptures by Anton Smit.
Clico was the idea of owner Jeanette Schwegmann and chef Sean Ackermann, who realised the need to cater for the travel-weary, discerning guest in need of personal attention. The boutique guesthouse manager is the young and vibrant Adéle de Waal, who has both local and international experience in tourism management.
Clico is poised to cater for upmarket corporate guests as well as leisure-seeking tourists. Whether you’re after wireless internet from a plush armchair, or a perfect martini made with Tanqueray gin after a tour to Soweto or the Cradle of Humankind, we’re here to indulge you.
We offer seven luxurious rooms, all with beautifully fitted en-suite bathroom, mini-bar, feather-soft, extra-length bed, flat-screen TV with a range of satellite channels, desk-cum-dressing table, air-conditioning and under-carpet heating.
Six of the rooms have balconies, while the seventh opens onto the garden. One room is wheelchair-accessible.
The rooms are individually furnished in warm, earthy browns, creams and soft greens, while the bathrooms are luxuriously appointed, from the designer taps to the light fittings which double as heaters. Most of the furniture has been custom-made for Clico by Dilly Lill’s, trendsetters in hotel furnishings. The modern décor complements the old-fashioned house, gently juxtaposing old and new in a manner guests will find relaxing and familiar.
Business services include telephones in the rooms, wireless internet and ADSL, fax, scanning and photocopying facilities, to keep guests in contact with the outside world while in a tranquil environment. Secure parking on the premises.
The common lounge area boasts a fully stocked “honesty bar”, from which guests can help themselves while warming up in front of a log fire in winter, or cooling down on an outside patio or beside the pool in summer.
The landscaped gardens make the escape from city life complete. A “Fairy Garden”, incorporating an extensive wooden deck, is available for private functions, such as intimate weddings.

Our chef, Sean Ackermann, has spent more than 20 years in the restaurant industry.
Dinners are an indulgent affair, with each course served with a wine carefully considered to enhance the flavour of the cuisine. For starters, you might enjoy a herb salad with goat’s cheese and honey dressing, served with a dry, white wine such as a full-bodied Semillon. One of Sean’s favourite main dishes is line fish poached in the traditional French way, with white wine, carrots, onion, bay leaves and a buttery béarnaise sauce, and served with a light Chardonnay.
For dessert, Sean might whip up an unusual hazelnut brûlée, and open a sweet dessert wine such as Weltevreden’s “Ouma-se-wyn”. Top it all off with a steaming cup of Farfell coffee, which, legend has it, is the only coffee the Danish royal family deign to drink …
Breakfasts are a selection of cereals, yoghurts, croissants or muffins, followed by a hot breakfast tailor-made for your tastebuds. It’s worth remembering that Sean has a secret recipe for scrambled eggs.
