Bed & Breakfast Accommodation
If you have always thought that a bed and breakfast is inferior to other types of accommodation, don’t be fooled! Many excellent bed & breakfast establishments exist, offering the same standards as guesthouses, the only difference is that the only meal they serve is breakfast.
Some key points:
- Usually the same standards and services as may be found in guesthouses will apply;
- The owner/manager usually lives in the house or on the property;
- No meals other than breakfast are offered;
- Bathroom facilities are usually en-suite and/or private;
- These establishments can be big or small and intimate;
- May also offer self-catering rooms.
Guesthouse Accommodation
A guesthouse is usually a converted house or manor, adapted to accommodate overnight guests, or a facility specifically built for this purpose, run as a commercial operation and is often managed by the owner.
Some key points:
- Personalized service and a homely atmosphere;
- Lunch and/or dinner available on request;
- Usually offers public areas which are for the exclusive use of guests;
- Owner/manager either lives off-site or in a separate area within the property;
- Usually a minimum of 5 rooms and a maximum of 12.
Hotel Accommodation
Hotel-style accommodation with well-designed rooms and public areas, may be small or large and likely to have conference/banqueting facilities. A la carte dining, 24-hour room service and reception, bars, concierge facilities, gift/curio shop(s), pool, on-site gym, top quality décor and the highest service standards will be found in luxury 4-5 star hotels.
Lodge Accommodation
Lodge accommodation must be of the highest standard, set in peaceful surrounding, usually putting guests in a location close to nature and with the building design and materials usually of wood, natural stone and thatch to blend seamlessly into the environment. Furnishings, ambience, food preparation and service are generally of exceptional quality and utmost importance. Game lodges also fall within this category, where the game experience is central to the guests' stay.
Self-catering Accommodation
Self-catering accommodation is becoming more popular in South Africa because of the excellent value for money offered. For absolute privacy and not being bound to mealtimes or set activities, self-catering accommodation offers the best well-earned vacation and can range from extremely luxurious accommodation to more rustic-style accommodation.
Self-catering Apartment or Suite Accommodation
These self-catering units including a fully equipped kitchen and may be in a high rise building usually in upmarket areas of bigger cities. They generally do not have a restaurant or many recreational facilities on the premises but are usually within close proximity of attractive leisure activities and shopping complexes.
Self-catering Townhouses and Duplex Apartments
This type of accommodation is fully self-catering and situated in access-controlled townhouse complexes. All of your needs are supplied, you only need to bring your clothes and beach/pool towels and make yourself at home. The perfect solution for an affordable holiday. This is especially true for families as you don’t pay per room, but rather for the home as a whole and have the freedom to entertain as well as total privacy and independence.
Self-catering Cottage, Chalet or Granny Flat Accommodation
These are self-catering units, usually free-standing cottage(s) or chalet(s) with their own kitchen and bathroom facilities and separate entrance, in a garden or bush setting. Generally small rooms with limited leisure facilities.
This category includes 'granny flats' on private residential properties. These are usually limited to 1 or 2 units (seldom more) that may sleep 2-6 persons.
Self-catering Resorts and Camping Accommodation
Self-catering resorts or camping accommodation consist of medium to large groupings of chalets, cottages or apartments with extensive recreational facilities which may include swimming, tennis, squash, boating, horse-riding etc. Facilities of this kind may also include caravan and/or camping sites.
Self-catering Guesthouse or Bed & Breakfast Combination Accommodation
Many guest houses, bed & breakfasts and even hotels offer rooms or apartments with full self catering or semi-self catering facilities in the establishment or on the premises. Self-catering units in these setting may include only basic facilities such as a small kitchenette with a microwave, small fridge/freezer, kettle, toaster and crockery and cutlery for the number of persons that it caters for.
4-5 Star Accommodation
Establishments that have been awarded 4 or 5 Star ratings are only the highest standard of accommodation in all categories, ranging from guesthouses to self-catering establishments.
