Free State

Formerly the Orange Free State, a remnant of the founding fathers of South Africa’s first Boer Republics, The Free State rests on the central plateau of South Africa. The capital, Bloemfontein, is also South Africa’s judicial capital.

This province is known primarily as South Africa’s breadbasket, but provides for adventure of the traditional “bush safari” type, game drives and exploration of the many geological wonders, such as the majestic sandstone cliffs of the Golden Gate National Park, and a rich cultural history, ranging from pre-historic rock art to Boer monuments.

The Free State is the home of two of the world’s most impressive geological wonders – the Vredefort Dome, the oldest impact site of a major meteorite and the dramatic sandstone cliffs of the Golden Gate Highlands National Park.

The rich farmlands of the flat plains of the Free State sees the production of 70% of South Africa’s grain and towards the north and west of the province, mineral deposits (including gold and diamonds) are abundant. The grassy plains of this central section of the country also hosts large herds of game and as a result there are numerous game farms enticing visitors to experience life in the bush. Some of South Africa’s most valued Bushman rock art can also be found in the Free State in the regions around Clarens, Bethlehem, Ficksburg and Ladybrand.
