Gauteng is the smallest of South Africa’s nine provinces, but due to the fact that it is highly urbanized, this small geographical space is the most populous province in the country. With the sprawling metropoles of Pretoria in the north and Johannesburg in central Gauteng, the province is a hub of commercial activity. Pretoria is also the administrative seat of the South African government.
The roots of the province in the discovery of gold in Johannesburg in the late 1800s and the subsequent “gold rush” to this region of the country are still celebrated today. Mining still forms a big part of the economy and has become part of local tourism. Gauteng is also famous for being the home of the Cradle of Humankind where the world’s oldest fossilized hominid remains were discovered in the Sterkfontein Caves.
