Kwazulu Natal

The province is also the historical home of the mightly African Zulu nation and among its attractions are many famous battlefields marking dramatic events in South Africa’s turbulent history. Here you will also find landmarks where Mahatma Ghandi and Nelson Mandela worked towards freedom and tens of thousands of ancient San (Bushmen) rock paintings in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg mountains.
The rolling hills and exquisite mountains of KwaZulu-Natal witnessed many historic battles between the Zulu tribes, the Boer settlers and the British, a fact which plays a large part in tourism in this region, including the development of the Battlefields Routes and the Midlands Meander, encouraging visitors to explore the beautiful scenery and the culture and arts of the area at the same time.
The striking mountains of the Drakensberg range are a World Heritage Site and offer numerous ways to appreciate the beauty and biodiversity of the region, whether ice-climbing, abseiling, white water rafting, hiking or helicopter rides take your fancy. On the coast you will find the busy port-city of Durban – also known as the “playground of Zululand” – well-known for its magnificent beaches and leisure activities, including Wilson’s Wharf on the Victoria Embankment and uShaka Marine World.
