Limpopo

Limpopo Province has one of the most interesting cultural histories in South Africa – home to lost civilizations and their enigmatic descendents, peoples of myths and unique traditional cultures, prehistoric roots and relics left in ancient caves, rocky outcrops and overhangs.

Although the Venda culture is dominant in this province and many of their sacred sites may be seen and visited, among the more well-known smaller groups of the fascinating Limpopo peoples is the village of the Balobedu, governed by their own Rain Queen, surrounded by an ancient cycad forest and open to visitors during the day.

The Kruger National Park, a spectacular game park covering over 1.9 million hectares and known for its immense diversity of wildlife (including the “Big 5”), is one of the foremost attractions that Limpopo province has to offer. Over 1.4 million visitors are received at the Park every year to view herds of elephants, lions on the prowl, thousands of small game and over a 1000 leopards in their natural habitat.

South Africa’s northernmost province has been dubbed the country’s preferred eco-tourism destination.

Home to beautiful landscapes, majestic Baobab trees and a large network of protected areas, cultural sites and nature reserve, Limpopo province offers some of the most fascinating cultural and wildlife experiences that South Africa has to offer. From Walking with Lions at the Range Resort outside the capital city of Polokwane and the vast Kruger National Park where the “Big 5” may be seen in their natural habitat alongside a wealth of smaller wildlife and birds to exploratory journeys through the rich mysticism of Lake Fundudzi and the Thathe Vondo Forest, Limpopo province is a must for any eco-tourism enthusiast.
