North West
The North West province situated along the northern border of South Africa, between the Northern Cape and Limpopo province is known for its mines – primarily gold and diamonds, but also uranium (mined at Klerksdorp) and platinum (mined at Rustenburg and Brits). English is spoken here primarily as a second language, with the majority of residents being Tswana, with smaller groups of Afrikaans, Sotho and Xhosa people.
Game viewing, fishing, hiking and various adventure sports are abundant in the North West province, also famous as the home of the extravagant Sun City and Lost City hotel and entertainment complex.
The North West Province is known for its vast grasslands that offer two of the country’s largest game reserves and the Taung Heritage Site where the skull of an early hominid (pre-historic human) was found in 1924.
The capital city of Mafikeng was the backdrop of early events from the history of South Africa (notably the 1899 Siege of Mafikeng during the Anglo-Boer War) and is now the home of various historical sites and museums to preserve the history of the province and the building blocks of South Africa’s history.
The North West province has also been the home of Sun City and The Lost City, a massive hotel and entertainment complex, featuring an exceptional golf course, large casino and every imaginable luxury.
