The Cape Karoo

Characterised by expansive plains and mountain ranges, the dry Karoo region is dotted with historic towns, fossils, rock art and indigenous wildlife. The famous Wine Route also meanders through this area of the Western Cape.

Towns include: Beaufort West, Prince Albert, Laingsburg and Murraysburg.

Oudtshoorn is situated in the Klein Karoo 55 kilometres from the large coastal town of George. First class hotels, lodges, inns, and guesthouses await the visitor. The Cango Caves: One of the worlds great natural wonders, sculptured by nature through the ages, the Cango Caves are situated close to Oudtshoorn. Mysterious and breathtaking limestone formations in a wide variety of natural colours, a subterranean wonderland. Regular guided tours are offered daily.

The Ostriches: Amid the 400 ostrich farms surrounding the town, 3 have distinguished themselves worthy to be named " show farms". On these farms you can see this exotic bird species up close, buy products made from their feathers and eggs or even ride an ostrich if you are feeling adventurous.

Cheetahs and Crocodiles: The Cango Wildlife Park is home to a variety of wildlife and is famous for being a highly successful breeding station of the threatened Cheetah species.  You can have yourself photographed with a cheetah cub or see crocodiles and alligators in action.

The Klein Karoo National Arts Festival: Annually in March/April, more than 100 000 lovers of the various arts, converge on Oudtshoorn for a week of dancing, films, cabaret, classical music, comedy, contemporary music, open air concerts, plays, literary art & poetry.

Rivers & Falls: Numerous rivers, streams and falls have their origins in the surrounding Swartberg, Outeniqua, Kamanassie mountain ranges. Waterfalls abound, and visitors can safely visit two examples at the Vrede and Meiringspoort falls.

Hiking and Biking:  Hiking and biking trails are in abundance, ranging from lush subtropical to semi-arid locations.
