Namaqualand & Olifants River Valley

The Olifants River Valley is known for the high-quality honey, tea, excellent wines and fruit (particularly citrus) that are produced here. The majestic Cederberg mountains are an exquisite backdrop to this green and lush valley.
Towards the north, the Valley leads into Namaqualand, famous for its wild flower display every spring.
Towns in this area include: Vredendal, Citrusdal, Strandfontein, Clanwilliam, Springbok and Port Nolloth.
The Cederberg and Winterhoek Wilderness areas are well-known for their scenic trails. The Cederberg mountain boasts an incredible collection of natural rock formations such as the Maltese Coss, Wolfberg Arch & Crags, Lot's Wife and Soldiers Head. Also not to be missed are the wonderful legacy left by Khoi and Bushmen through their rock art that can be seen at various sites in the region's mountains.
Flower season usually starts towards the end of July, and depending on the weather, lasts till the end of September. Flowers can be seen in nature reserves, nature gardens and along the road and various towns host wild flower shows during the flower season.
Mission Stations like Goedverwacht and Wupperthal, with beautiful historical churches and other historic buildings, are popular destinations for those interested in history. You can enjoy a traditional lunch or experience a walkabout tour through one of the villages, enjoy sumptuous seafood at the open-air eateries and other restaurants on the West Coast or sample the wines of the region at the wine cellars on the Swartland and Olifants River Wine Routes.
