West Coast
Stretching from Blaauwberg in the south to Namaqualand in the north, the Cape West Coast region consists of a stretch of small fishing villages and towns along the southwestern coast of South Africa and the Western Cape.
Home to unique wildlife and plantlife, the West Coast area is even more famous for its welcoming locals, traditional and seafood dining experiences and expansive beaches.
Towns in this region include: Velddrif, Lambert's Bay, Yzerfontein, Langebaan and Paternoster.
The West Coast is a watersport enthusiast's paradise. Windsurfing on the Langebaan Lagoon, kayaking at Paternoster, skiing on the Clanwilliam Dam and angling along the coast or at the dams in the area are but a few of the activities on offer. You can choose from a variety of hiking trails, ranging from easy to strenuous, along the coastline or in the mountains. The West Coast National Park is well-known for the scenic trails.
Beautiful, sandy beaches interspersed with rocky areas adorn the desolate coastline. Here visitors can swim, run, play beach volleyball or just relax.
Bird watchers can enjoy hours of birding at places like Langebaan Lagoon, the Berg River Estuary near Velddrif, Rocherpan Nature Reserve, Dwarskersbos, Verlorenvlei at Elandsbaai, Bird Island, Lambert's Bay, or at the mouth of the Olifants River near Papendorp.
