MOTOR & BIKE RACING AT KILLARNEY

Serious racing is due to return to these parts for the first time since July, when the Western Province Motor Club stage their annual Spring Meeting at Killarney on Saturday. But don’t be misled, the vernal equinox only occurs later in the month and the winter weather is likely to still be with us for a while.

Which -- if it happens -- is going offer an advantage to those hotshots in the lower classes who will be able to take the flag ahead of drivers ranked above them, without exceeding the laid down fastest times in their own category.

This applies specifically to Industrial Abrasives Sports and GT high speed frogmen like Jochen Wieda, who is still classified as a class C competitor despite having already finished first overall in an earlier (very) wet weather meeting, in his Porsche GT-3.

MOTOCROSS HISTORY

Motocross commenced in a serious way at Killarney in 1969, when Piet van Niekerk and his team ran combined car and bike events. Since then the sport has grown tremendously at Killarney, with Ronnie Scullard MX Chairman until the early 80’s, Adrian Pheiffer taking over the running of the MX at Killarney until the early 90’s.

Gerald Bessesen then ran the section for most of the 90’s until Garth Londt took over the reigns in late 1996, and has run the section with the help of his whole family since. With 2 WPMC MX competitors taking SA Championships, Mark Connelly taking the SA Junior Championship in 1976 and Mike Hopkins the 500cc Senior Championship the following year.

KARTING HISTORY

The first karts in South Africa were produced in the Cape by Adrian Pheiffer. Karting is, nternationally, the premier introduction for youngsters wanting to become stars on four wheels in the motorsport industry.

The local Karting Club is situated within the Killarney Motor Racing complex and has been in existence since the late 1960’s and caters for all age groups (in different classes) ranging in ages from 4 years old to the over 50's!

All karts are privately owned and the Club runs a Regional, Club and National Championship. The Western Province Regional Championship consists of 8 race meetings and the National Championship is run over 5 events in different regions including Killarney.
