I discovered the lodge nestled between spectacular mountain scenery and the shores of the wild Atlantic, some thirty kilometres from Cape Town city in Noordhoek.
On arrival at Wild Rose Country Lodge, I was greeted by my charming host and a glass of sherry. After a brief check-in, I was escorted via tastefully appointed halls and passages to my room. I paused a moment to enjoy the view through the dining area.
Beyond the unspoiled wetlands, five kilometres of crisp white beach stretched, lazily beckoning me closer. My suite was one of several, each tastefully and individually decorated. Each with glorious sea or mountain. Views.
Mine was the African Room - elegant yet comfortable with a slightly colonial air. The attention to detail was impeccable. I continued to admire the scenery from the pleasant position of a foam bath.
Once refreshed I made my way to the intimate bar for a sundowner or two as the glowing orb slipped quietly into the sea. Later I drew closer to the log fire in the lounge and relaxed while my host made arrangements for dinner at a fabulous seafood restaurant which overlooked the Indian Ocean.
Up early I started the day with a full breakfast served in the sunny herb-filled courtyard. I then had the fun task of deciding how to spend my time; a gallop on the beach, take in a wine farm or two, or a round of golf perhaps? Once again my host, eager to please, organised everything possible.
African: As you set foot into the African room, you can almost hear the distant beat of drums that are so much part of our culture. The four poster bed complete with mosquito net insures that those African beasts are kept at bay during the dreaming hours. Victorian bath and separate shower / Mountain Views.
Punjab: The Punjab room complete with its warm, bright décor and elephant lamps conjures up the aromatic spiciness of the Indian Sub-Continent. The thatch and beautiful green hues of the surrounding countryside contrast beautifully with the warm décor of this room. Bathtun and separate shower. Upstairs room with mountain views.
Moroccan: The magnificent contrast of deep blues and terracotta create a very calm and relaxed atmosphere in this room. Large somber bathroom with bathtub and separate shower. Doors leading onto the garden.
Kalahari: Walking into this room is like stepping into a Kalahari sunset, with rag-washed walls remimiscent of drifting sands. Although fearful looking to some, the African masks hang on the walls, keeping a watchful eye on our precious surrounds. Victorian bath and separate shower. Sea Views.
Beyond the Sea: This room is quiet and tranquil, the door that leads out onto the pool area allows for that Fresh Sea Breeze to creep in. If you love the ocean this room is for you. Victorian bathtub and separate shower.
Terra Fish: Underwater has never been this warm before! The undersea theme of this room is comforting to those who are naturally attracted to sea life. Has sea views. Has a bathtub and attached hand shower. Door leading out into garden.
